Peak Stress15:08TRANSITIONackedAcknowledged: Peak-stress transition checked: live temp 86.5F and VPD 1.79 kPa are above band, but this matches the active extreme hot/dry plan. Controller already has full cooling/wet authority active (VENTILATE with vent, both fans, fog, and mister center on), dew margin is safe at 13.9F, wet/fog are not blocked, and active tunables are already at/near the aggressive guardrail-clean posture (mister_engage_kpa 1.25 near vpd_high+0.03, mister_all_kpa 1.40, mister_pulse_gap_s 22.5s, fog_escalation_kpa 0.10 min)... Resolved 15:08 MDT.
Forecast deviation19:00FORECAST_DEVIATIONackedAcknowledged: FORECAST_DEVIATION assessed as forecast VPD overcall/catch-up, not an actionable live weather miss. Current house is 80.4F, VPD 1.27 kPa, RH 64%, dew margin 13.5F with SEALED_MIST_FOG active and fog running; vent/fans/heaters/misters are off. Deviation direction matches the known positive VPD forecast bias, so no tunable change is needed while active wet/fog recovery is already serving the slight VPD-high edge. Resolved 19:00 MDT.
Decline19:14TRANSITIONackedAcknowledged: TRANSITION decline checked live climate, equipment, active plan, setpoints, and attempted required retrieval. Current 78.1F / 1.14 kPa VPD / 65% RH with 12.5F dew margin is inside the served VPD corridor, all wet/fog/vent/fan/heater equipment is currently off, and the active plan already has an evening taper waypoint at 22:30. No concrete signal for a tactical override; preserving current plan. Resolved 19:15 MDT.
Evening planning cycle20:15SUNSETplan_writtenWrote public plan iris-20260802-2015. Resolved 20:16 MDT.
Forecast deviation20:45FORECAST_DEVIATIONackedAcknowledged: FORECAST_DEVIATION reviewed: current VPD is 1.10 kPa versus forecast overcall, dew margin 12.6F, mode VENTILATE for temperature only, and no wet/fog equipment fault. The deviation is in the same direction as the documented positive VPD forecast bias, so this is forecast overestimation/catch-up rather than an actionable live climate miss. No tunable change needed. Resolved 20:45 MDT.

Reflection

Validating previous cycle: iris-20260801-0600

Previous hypothesis: SUNRISE plan for Saturday 2026-08-01. Friday closed weak at planner_score/compliance 59.0 versus 67.3 seven-day average, with legacy temp compliance 49.0% and VPD compliance 44.2%. The bottleneck was dual-axis, with VPD slightly tighter by percent and heat/VPD-high almost tied by stress hours: heat 10.52h, VPD-high 10.19h, VPD-low 1.45h, cold 0. Dew safety held (dp_margin_min_f 7.9F, 0 dp-risk hours). Cost fields are unavailable; water was 211 gal total and 52 gal mister water, essentially flat versus the 214 gal seven-day average, so water is not the binding constraint today. I evaluated iris-20260731-2016 at 4/10 versus deterministic anchor 1. The gap is intentional: I credit dew safety and no cold/VPD-low in its window, while the anchor correctly penalizes 693 VPD-high guardrail events and 648 held events. That means the outcome was safe but the materialization was dirty… Result: MIDNIGHT plan governed a warm/dry pre-dawn window before the 2026-08-02 SUNRISE plan. Window scorecard was 67.3 with temp compliance 49.4% and VPD compliance 40.5%; stress was heat 2.04h, VPD-high 2.32h, VPD-low 0.23h, cold 0. Dew safety held with no dp-risk, but the plan did not materially improve corridor control and VPD stayed above band for much of the window despite a dew-safe moisture posture. The hypothesis correctly anticipated extreme hot/dry Sunday and safe dew margin, but moisture response overnight remained limited while fog was clock-blocked and outdoor VPD was still high. Human score 5/10: directionally correct and safe, but only moderate compliance and no clean VPD recovery. Score: 5/10

New finding: After an extreme hot/dry day, overnight VPD can remain above the crop corridor even with a dew-safe moisture posture because fog is outside its safe window and outdoor air remains dry; keep bounded evening/overnight wet assist available until observed VPD recovers, but do not assume extra water will buy rapid VPD compliance before the outdoor VPD drop arrives. → Added to Lessons Learned

Hypothesis

Testing: Extreme hot/dry response-prior plan: keep wet/fog assist guardrail-clean at peaks, but taper overnight/evening based on observed VPD recovery and acknowledge structural heat limits. Expected outcome: For Sunday, maintain 0 dp-risk hours and no cold stress; reduce VPD-high guardrail holds versus the 278 held events in the evaluated SUNRISE plan; keep wet assist available during the 08:30-17:00 dry/fog-safe window while accepting physics-limited heat stress above 100F.

Parameter rationale

mister_engage_kpa0.82 → 1.27; live VPD is near the 1.22 kPa high edge and Sunday/Monday corrected VPD remains far above band after 08:00

make first-stage moisture available near the high edge during confirmed dry stress without asking the guardrail to repair conservative thresholds

mister_all_kpa1.02 → 1.45; Sunday has broad whole-house hot/dry stress with raw VPD over 6 kPa and high zone spread risk

permit all-zone assist during broad dry stress while avoiding values that suppress escalation

mister_pulse_gap_s30.0 → 30.0; recent response priors show VPD errors improve only modestly, but active dry stress still needs the guardrail cap rather than a longer gap

preserve dry-stress recovery without increasing churn beyond the current short-gap posture

fog_escalation_kpa0.2 → 0.15; VPD-high overlaps the 07:00-17:00 fog-safe window with dew margin currently above 16F

make the 7x fog path available during hot-dry VENTILATE while firmware blocks fog outside safe windows

mister_water_budget_gal180.0 → 300.0; Sunday/Monday are extreme hot/dry and water budget should not be the limiting factor during safe VPD-high recovery

avoid budget-limited VPD recovery while using higher overnight resource sensitivity to avoid unnecessary wetting

Reflection

Validating previous cycle: iris-20260801-2015

Previous hypothesis: SUNSET plan for Saturday 2026-08-01. Today is safe but weak for corridor control: planner_score/compliance 64.5 versus 66.3 seven-day average, temp compliance 53.2% and VPD compliance 45.4%. VPD is still the tighter axis by percentage, while stress is effectively dual hot/dry: VPD-high 7.76h and heat 7.67h, plus 1.71h VPD-low and no cold. Dew safety held with dp_margin_min_f 8.5F and 0 dp-risk hours. Resource cost fields are unavailable, so I am not using kWh or cost for decisions; water context is 342 gal today versus 213 gal seven-day average, so water was elevated but did not buy enough VPD compliance. I evaluated iris-20260801-0017 at 5/10 versus deterministic anchor 3. I credit dew safety and no cold, but the anchor correctly penalized 315 VPD-high guardrail events and 308 held events… Result: SUNRISE plan governed the main 2026-08-02 hot/dry day window. Window scorecard was 61.1 with temp compliance 40.0% and VPD compliance 32.1%; stress was 5.44h heat, 6.27h VPD-high, 0.47h VPD-low, and 0 cold. Forecasted extreme heat was accurate (103.0F predicted vs 103.2F actual) and dew safety held, but solar was higher than predicted (998 W/m2 vs 842) and the guardrail-clean wet/fog posture still did not deliver strong corridor control. The VPD-high and heat stress windows matched actual stress kind/severity, but expected effects from lower mister thresholds, 30s gap, fog_escalation 0.15, and 300 gal budget were only partially achieved: VPD-high remained dominant and water rose to 501 gal total. The direct-wet evening recovery hypothesis remains biologically plausible but not yet validated for compliance improvement. Score: 4/10

New finding: On extreme 100F+ / high-solar days, guardrail-clean band-coupled wet/fog assist can be necessary and safe but still deliver only modest VPD improvement while using high water; grade it as physics-limited dual heat/VPD stress and avoid assuming further water alone will raise compliance without observed response improvement. → Added to Lessons Learned

Hypothesis

Testing: Extreme hot/dry response-prior test: keep wet/fog assist guardrail-clean during dual heat/VPD misses, but compare VPD improvement against water use and guardrail holds before escalating beyond the 300 gal practical cap. Expected outcome: Dew risk remains 0h with dp_margin_min_f >5F; Sunday heat and VPD-high stress still occur but controller-attributable wet-assist gaps and guardrail-held events fall versus Saturday; water may be elevated but should not exceed the 300 gal practical mist budget unless emergency VPD override fires.

thermal lead, solar pre-cool, all-fan authority already enabled, evaporative assist, and explicit acceptance of physics-limited heat above exhaust capacity

vpd_highhigh · 2026-08-03T07:00:00-06:00 to 2026-08-04T18:30:00-06:00

repeat band-coupled wet/fog assist while dew margin is healthy, with lower confidence under cloud/storm uncertainty and response-prior water discipline

vpd_lowmedium · 2026-08-04T20:00:00-06:00 to 2026-08-05T06:00:00-06:00

humid-evening taper: higher dew margin, higher resource sensitivity, lower mist duty, earlier wet cutoff, and wider fog escalation

Parameter rationale

mister_engage_kpa1.34 → 1.27; current vpd_high is about 1.22 kPa and corrected VPD rises above band after 08:00; repeated clamps held conservative requests down during VPD-high

make first-stage moisture available near the high edge without relying on the dispatcher to repair conservative thresholds

mister_all_kpa1.57 → 1.45; whole-house dry stress with raw VPD 5-6.6 kPa and RH 7-14% from midday through evening

allow all-zone assist during broad dry stress while avoiding values that suppress escalation

mister_pulse_gap_s60.0 → 30.0; recent VPD-high guardrail repeatedly held long gaps down to 30s and hot/dry lessons support short gaps during VENTILATE dry stress

reduce VPD-high duration during safe hot/dry windows without increasing beyond the guardrail-clean cap

fog_escalation_kpa0.4 → 0.15; VPD-high overlaps the 07:00-17:00 fog-safe window and dew margin is currently 8.9F

make the 7x fog path available during hot-dry VENTILATE while firmware blocks unsafe fog

mister_water_budget_gal180.0 → 300.0; Sunday and Monday are extreme hot/dry and yesterday's water spend did not fully solve VPD, so the budget should not be the limiting factor during safe dry recovery

avoid budget-limited recovery while using resource sensitivity and evening taper to avoid waste

direct_wet_stress_latest_hour21.0 → 23.0; Sunday and Monday evenings remain very dry above the VPD corridor with safe dew margins expected

permit bounded evening dry-stress recovery instead of a clock-only wet shutdown

Reflection

Validating previous cycle: iris-20260802-0601

Previous hypothesis: SUNRISE plan for Sunday 2026-08-02. Saturday closed at planner_score/compliance 69.2 versus 66.3 seven-day average, with legacy temp compliance 50.5% and VPD compliance 40.7%; VPD was the tighter axis and stress was dual hot/dry: VPD-high 11.06h, heat 10.21h, VPD-low 1.71h, cold 0. Dew safety held with dp_margin_min_f 8.5F and 0 dp-risk hours. Utility cost fields are unavailable; water was elevated at 376 gal versus 213 gal seven-day average, so water increased materially but did not buy enough VPD compliance. I evaluated iris-20260801-2015 at 4/10 versus deterministic anchor 1. The gap is deliberate: I credit correct stress-type anticipation and dew-safe biological outcome, while the anchor correctly penalizes 455 VPD-high guardrail events and 427 held events… Result: Completed SUNSET/evening window was short but materially safer than the prior hot-dry daytime windows. Window scorecard for iris-20260802-2015 covered about 0.168 d and showed score/compliance 100.0 with only 0.18h heat stress and 0.22h VPD-high stress, no VPD-low or cold stress, and dew safety preserved. The strategy to keep bounded dew-safe evening wet assist available while tapering overnight resource pressure matched conditions: VPD remained near/above band but did not create condensation risk. Limitations: this was a short low-solar window and does not prove the same water/fog posture can fix extreme daytime dual heat/VPD stress; guardrail/missed items remained visible in later audit for direct_wet_stress_latest_hour and wet-stress override. Score: 7/10

New finding: Short post-sunset hot-dry recovery windows can score cleanly with bounded wet assist and dew-safe tapering, but do not validate daytime extreme-heat moisture efficacy; grade evening recovery separately from physics-limited solar windows. → Added to Lessons Learned

Hypothesis

Testing: SUNSET dry-night taper: preserve dew-safe VPD-high recovery through evening, then reduce overnight mist duty/churn while pre-staging Monday hot-dry ramp. Expected outcome: Hold dew-risk hours at 0, avoid cold stress, reduce overnight VPD-high drift where moisture is effective, and enter Monday morning with wet/fog assist available near the VPD high edge without additional guardrail repair.

Parameter rationale

mister_engage_kpa1.0 → 1.25; live VPD is 1.43 kPa against vpd_high about 1.22 and overnight raw VPD remains above band

keep first-stage moisture available near the high edge without forcing dispatcher guardrail repair

mister_all_kpa1.21 → 1.45; zone spread is large and Monday broad dry stress reaches raw VPD 6.7 kPa with RH near 8%

permit all-zone assist during confirmed broad dry stress while avoiding conservative thresholds that suppress escalation

mister_pulse_gap_s30.0 → 40.0; overnight temperatures fall and humidity holds better than afternoon while dew margin remains safe

reduce overnight water/churn and VPD-low risk without closing wet assist during active VPD-high

fog_escalation_kpa0.2 → 0.15; Monday VPD-high overlaps the 07:00-17:00 fog-safe window and dew margin is currently 17.8F

make the 7x fog path available during Monday hot-dry VENTILATE while firmware blocks unsafe/out-of-window fog

direct_wet_stress_latest_hour21.0 → 23.0; evening remains dry above the VPD corridor with healthy dew margin and no occupancy

permit bounded evening dry-stress recovery instead of a clock-only moisture shutdown
